HOW TO MAKE SUSHI MAKI ROLLS

Sushi rolls are usually known as 'maki rolls', the generalized name for all sushi that is rolled. When a roll is made with the rice on the outside, it is known as 'uramaki roll'.

Traditionally, in Japan, nori is on the outside of the roll, and rice on the inside. Uramaki is less popular in Japan, but very popular in other areas of the world, especially North America, where the now famous 'California roll' was made, in of course, California. The chef's decision to place rice on the outside of the roll, was merely to make the roll more appealing to new customers.

Since then, many new rolls have emerged with various ingredients, and many made with rice on the outside, just like the california roll. Many rolls are named after places, and some from modern and historic animal names.

Sushi rolls also have different sizes: 1 ingredient - small roll(hosomaki-nori on outside), medium maki roll(most popular-nori or rice on outside) usually 2-3 ingredients, and futomaki which can have several ingredients and is usually the larger maki roll.

To make the sushi rolls you must know how to place the rice on to the nora sheet, and how to roll the sheet. Usually a half sheet is used, although some type of rolls use a full sheet.

A bamboo mat(makisu) is also used. The half sheet of nora (roasted seaweed sheet) is placed on the bamboo mat. The mat helps in the rolling process by keeping the roll firm as you roll the rice and ingredients.
