Rolling Methods For Sushi Maki
Sushi maki is the name given to all sushi rolls in general. So a roll with rice on outside, or a roll with nora on outside can both be known as sushi maki.
On this page you can learn how to place the sushi rice on the nora sheet, and how to roll sushi maki.
The Bamboo Mat
The bamboo mat - makisu in Japanese, is helpful when rolling sushi, especially rolls with rice on the outside. You don't really need one when rolling sushi rolls with the nora
on the outside, however, the bamboo mat serves more than one purpose in sushi, so keep one handy.
First, place saran wrap over the rolling mat(makisu). Roll out enough wrap for 2 mats, then simply wrap it around the mat.

Amount of Rice
You have to measure out the amount of rice, About 3/4 cup is enough for a half sheet of nora.

Place a half nora sheet onto the bamboo mat.
Dip your fingers in small bowl water, then dry somewhat, then begin to move the rice. This will keep your fingers from sticking to the rice.
How To Place the Rice on the Nora
Place your rice onto the nora sheet as shown, to one side and more in the middle of the nora.

Now move the rice to the left and the right on the nora, but just on the one side.

Next, move the rice front left and right. Don't press too firmly on the rice - we don't want to mush the rice.

Finally, move remaining rice in center to center front. All areas of your nora sheet should be covered with rice.

If your adding sesame seeds to the rice, you can add them now, before it is rolled. Just sprinkle it over the rice before you add the ingredients.
If your making a roll with rice on outside, the seeds will show on the outside, and if your making a roll with nora on the outside then the sesame seeds
will be with the roll ingredients.

Adding Rice To a 3/4 Nora Sheet
If your using a three quarter nora sheet, you can use 3/4 to 1 cup of sushi rice. Use the same method to put the rice on the nora as the half sheet of nora.
Cutting a nora sheet to 3/4 is easy; just use scissors and cut 1/4 from a full sheet of nora. Three quarter nora sheets are used for 'deep fried sushi
rolls', and for some rolls that use 'short grain brown sushi rice'.

Add Your Ingredients
Now your ready to add ingredients to your nora sheet. But first, decide what type of roll method your going to use.
Rice on outside of roll, or nora on outside of roll.
If you want traditional roll (nora on outside) just add your ingredients on top of the rice on the nora sheet. Place them closer to the middle of the nora sheet. Then roll the nora with
the bamboo mat. Roll slow, keep the mat firm around the nora sheet as you roll.

If you want rice on outside of roll (uramaki roll) then you must flip the nora so rice is facing the bamboo mat. The rice won't stick to the bamboo mat, because we added the saran
wrap.

Now, add your ingredients to the top of nora, then roll the
nora using the bamboo mat.

Nora on Outside
Sushi Roll with nora on outside, is known as a Maki Roll, however, depending on how many ingredients you add to the roll, it can be called-
futomaki(many ingredients-usually more than 3), or hosomaki(if only 1 ingredient)
